Without flowers, most plants would not be able to reproduce, and most insects would not be able to get enough food that is necessary for them. Here are some interesting facts of flowering plants.

♦Most plants flower every year, but some take much longer. The century plant needs many years to flower, and then it dies. There is a more amazing plant from South America called Puya raimondii. It takes 150 years to flower, and then it also dies.

♦The smallest flowering plant in the world is thought to be the common watermeal. Its leaves are only 1mm across!

♦Bamboos have amazing flowering habits. There are many different kinds of bamboos, and they all have different habits. A few kinds of bamboos flower each year, but most wait much longer. What most amazes you is that all the bamboos of the same kind flower at exactly the same time, wherever they are growing. Nobody knows how they do this.

Snoopy may be the coolest dog in the world, and he might even be one of the greatest dogs on two legs. He is a happy-go-lucky dog that all children in the world love.

Snoopy is Charlie Brown's pet dog, although Snoopy can never remember his owner's name. For Snoopy, his master is just that "round-headed kid" who brings him delicious meals every day.

Snoopy never speaks, but he can make himself understood by using facial expressions and thought balloons.

In Snoopy's little head, he is everything but a dog. Since the 1960s, Snoopy has been standing on his two legs instead of four like the other dogs and doing things on his own. Here are two perfect examples that demonstrate this point.

Charlie once said to Snoopy, "Look, Snoopy, if that boy throws a branch, then his dog will run to pick it up and bring the branch back to him. " Hearing this, Snoopy then picked up a branch and threw it.

Another time, Charlie read his newspaper to Snoopy, " It says that there will be a dog-show. Will you want to take part in it?" Snoopy thought, "How can I? I don't even have a dog!"

F. Read the passage and answer the following questions.

In Canada and the United States, people enjoy having parties at home. They often get together with friends to have a meal or a chat.

They often invite friends to their homes like this, "Would you like to come over for dinner this Saturday night?" or "Hey, we're having a dinner on Friday. Can you come?"

Then you can say, "Thanks, I'd love to. What time would you like us to come?" or "Oh, sorry.  I am going to see a movie that night. "

Sometimes, however, people use expressions that sound like invitations, but they are not real __________, such as, "Please come over for a drink." or "Why don't you come over and see me?"

They are just polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations because they don't mention a time or date. They just show that the person is trying to be friendly. So you can reply like this, "Sure. That would be great!" or "OK." or "Yes, thanks."

1. According to the passage, where do Canadians and Americans like having parties?

  __________

2. What does the sentence, "Oh, sorry, I am going to see a movie that night." mean?

  __________

3. What do people want to show when they say something that sounds like an invitation?

4. What does the underlined word, "invitations", mean in Chinese?
