2019年人教版英语高中二年级上学期综合测试卷三

1、阅读理解

1.     Petrol and diesel cars may still dominate our roads, but their days are numbered. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 per cent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 per cent by 2020.

One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been "range anxiety"—drivers' concerns about running out of juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. In fact, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.

Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars met with distrust, and their high price tags drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars is starting to persuade critics. Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion engine models a run for their money.

As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the sea and sky. Electric boats are among the oldest electric vehicles, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric planes are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality.

Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. Were the US to act on the study's findings and replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 per cent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emission-free. Even so, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.

What Cocktail Parties Teach Us

You're at a party. Music is playing. Glasses are clinking. Dozens of conversations are driving up the decibel level. Yet among all those distractions, you can tune your attention to just one voice from many. This ability is what researchers call the "cocktail-party effect".

Scientists at the University of California in San Francisco have found where that sound-editing process occurs in the brain—in the auditory cortex just behind the ear, not in areas of higher thought. The auditory cortex boosts some sounds and turns down others so that when the signal reaches the higher brain, "it's as if only one person was speaking alone," says investigator Edward Chang.

These findings, published in the journal Nature last week, explain why people aren't very good at multitasking—our brains are wired for "selective attention" and can focus on only one thing at a time. That inborn ability has helped humans survive in a world buzzing with visual and auditory stimulation . But we keep trying to push the limits with multitasking, sometimes with tragic consequences. Drivers talking on cellphones, for example, are four times as likely to get into traffic accidents as those who aren't.

Many of those accidents are due to "inattentional blindness", in which people can, in effect, turn a blind eye to things they aren't focusing on. The more attention a task demands, the less attention we can pay to other things in our field of vision. Images land on our retinas and are either boosted or played down in the visual cortex before being passed to the brain, just as the auditory cortex filters sounds, as shown in the Nature study last week. "It's a push-pull relationship—the more we focus on one thing, the less we can focus on others," says Diane M. Beck, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Illinois.

Studies over the past decade at the University of Utah show that drivers talking on hands-free cellphones are just as influenced as those on hands-held phones because it is the conversation, not the device, that is distracting their attention. Those talking on any kind of cellphone react more slowly and miss more traffic signals than other motorists.

Some people can train themselves to pay extra attention to things that are important—like police officers learn to scan crowds for faces and conductors can listen for individual instruments within the orchestra as a whole. Many more think they can effectively multitask, but are actually shifting their attention rapidly between two things and not getting the full effect of either, experts say.

What have scientists in University of California found about "the cocktail-party effect"?

A.Usually there is only one person who is speaking alone.

B.All kinds of annoying sounds drive up the decibel level.

C.The higher brain processes sounds and images selectively.

D.Sounds are sorted out before reaching the higher brain.

What do we learn from the passage?

A.We are biologically incapable of multitasking.

B.We survive distractions in life by multitasking.

C.We cannot multitask without extra attention.

D.We benefit from pushing the limit with multitasking.

Which of the following is an example of "inattentional blindness"?

A.A careless driver lost his eyesight after a car accident.

B.Police scanned the crowds and located the criminal.

C.A manager talked on a hands-free phone with his client.

D.A pedestrian had a car accident because of phubbing .

The main purpose of the passage is to ____.

A.compare and contrast           B.inform and explain

C.argue and discuss           D.examine and evaluate

3.     To start a conversation about the secret to happiness, ABC News' health editor Dr. Richard Besser hosted a Twitter chat Tuesday. Experts from the National Institutes of Health, Mayo Clinic, Harvard University and TEDMED, as well as clinicians and people from across the country, joined the one-hour discussion. There are countless ways to measure happiness. With research on the TOPic increasing, researchers have carried out surveys to study people's sense of well-being.

Angela Haupt, health and wellness editor for U.S. News and World Report, said, "Happiness indicators include life satisfaction, health and community engagement."

@toddkashdan added that, "despite problems with self-reports, there is no better way to measure happiness than focusing on personal thoughts and feelings."

While scientists try to find out what caused happiness, others often believe that true joy doesn't exist. Dr Friedman, a psychiatrist at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Hospital, said that "happiness is hard to measure, but easy to recognize."

Still, common themes about satisfaction come up in these conversations. Finding meaning in daily work was important. Indeed, researchers have found that having creative and purposeful work to do is a key factor in happiness. But people were quick to state the importance of balancing work and family obligations.

Chat participants agreed that money does not surely bring happiness. And studies agree once people's basic needs like food and housing are met, higher incomes do little to improve your happiness. At last, people found value in their connections with others. Research shows that having support through friends, family, and social networks can bring happiness. Many agree with @drmommy, who said "I measure my happiness by the loving people that are around me."

So, can we increase our happiness? Expressing gratitude is a possible way of feeling happiness. Researchers have found that people who regularly write down things for which they are grateful in "gratitude journals" have increased satisfaction in life, higher energy levels, and improved health. In one study, people who read a letter of appreciation to someone in their lives prove happier almost one month later. Performing acts of kindness can raise your moods.

Data show that our relationships matter, too. People who are interested in meaningful conversations with friends or family are reported to be happier than those who don't. Close interpersonal ties and strong social support are important for happiness.

Dr Friedman may agree that ____.

A.happiness can be measured by health

          B.happiness can never be measured

C.it's easy to see whether one is happy

D.it's hard to seek for happiness

It can be learnt that @drmommy measures his happiness by ____.

          A.health           B.purposeful work

          C.meaningful work           D.friends' support

We can learn from the passage that money can affect your happiness if you are relatively ____.

          A.poor           B.sensitive           C.unhealthy           D.hopeless

What's the main purpose of the passage?

A.To introduce us the results of a chat

B.To give us some advice on improving happiness

C.To correct the misunderstanding of happiness

D.To remind us to find the secret to happiness

4.     The phone ID flashed, "Emergency Vet". "Oh no" I whispered. I could not lose Merlin now.

Ron and I had tried to have children for a long time with depressing results. I threw myself into my work. Any maternal feelings I had were spent on Merlin.

I couldn't wait to get home from work each night. I wanted to pick up that warm bundle of loving fur and nestle him. I wanted to sing "Rock-a-bye Merlin", as I did every night as he would put his paws around my neck.

Merlin was my comfort especially at times when I wondered if God was listening. But last night something had changed. Not only did I sing "Rock-a-Bye M1erlin", but I asked, you're gone?"

Although Merlin was 19 years old, a senior in the· age of a cat, he didn't look or act that way. I didn't want to accept the fact that he was nearing the end of his lifetime. My job at the law firm was so demanding and stressful that I couldn't imagine getting through the day without Merlin waiting to greet me at home.

I dialed the vet's number. I asked for my husband but he already left. Then I took a breath and asked the question that no one wants to ask, "Is my Merlin still alive?" The nurse said "yes."

Ron came home and said that Merlin had almost no red blood cells left. White blood cells were replacing them. Merlin would need expensive transfusions most likely on a monthly basis. We both knew Merlin was running out of time. I asked Ron to drive me to the vet so I could say goodbye to my little boy cat but he was beat tired and it was late. Ron said if Merlin was still alive he next morning then he would take me to the vet.

The next morning I called the vet. Merlin had survived the night. After driving to the vet, I went into the examining room. The nurse brought Merlin and placed him on an examining table on his side. His eyes were tightly shut. I thought he died already. I carefully edged my hand to reach his body. His body felt warm, but when I spoke his name there was no response. No response to his name or that I was there and that I loved him. I was extremely sad. In that examining room I felt helpless. I wondered how many people in an examining room felt as helpless as I did. Feeling driven to prayer I yelled, "God this isn't good enough. I need to see my Merlin the way I remember him, I need a miracle and I need it now!"

At that moment, God granted a miracle. Merlin's favorite compliment entered my mind. I said, "Merlin, you are beautiful and you are gorgeous, do you hear me?"

     One eye opened.

I said "Gotcha". I kept repeating those words.

Merlin opened the other eye and, one limb at a time, got up. He was waiting for that phrase. He wanted to hear that he was beautiful and gorgeous again.

     Then I experienced another miracle.

There was no sound in that examining room until Merlin started walking to me. From out of nowhere, or maybe from heaven, I clearly heard a song we sung in church often: "It Is Well With My Soul. " I remember thinking, "Yes, it is well with my soul. I got to see my little boy cat one more time."

Merlin walked to me. He put his face in mine, which he had never done before. He rubbed a circle around my face twice. Merlin said goodbye with his face and marked me for life.

Ron appeared shocked that Merlin was up and had walked to me. I said to Merlin, "Tell God you are a good boy and how much we love you" and then handed him back to the nurse.

Tears of gratitude poured forth in memory of a miracle. You see for nineteen years God spoke to me through a special cat named granted a miracle. That miracle gave me time to say goodbye.

The most excited moment was when Mother put a big birthday cake on the table and all my friends begin to sing Happy Birthday. Saw the 18 candles burning, I couldn't keep back my tears. Without Mother's and Father's love, I wouldn't be leading so a happy life now. Mother asked me make a wish before I blew out all the candles. 6、书面表达

9.阅读下面短文,依据其内容用英语写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

When people introduce themselves, I always hear them say "I'm just a housewife." I don't understand why their introduction is always filled with regret and self-pity. Is it, really a crime to be a housewife? Is it really embarrassing when you choose not to work outside and instead choose to work in your home?

How could you be "just a housewife" when the basic social unit of society depends on you and your service? A housewife works for the longest hour, supporting your husband, child studies, caring for elders, managing finances, paying bills, grocery shopping, cooking according to individual taste, cleaning, etc. A housewife could be anyone: daughter, wife, mother, teacher, financial advisor, fashion designer and nurse, gardener, driver, cook, and so on. Don't think you are not being paid for it. You get the reward that no money can offer—the love and affection of your family, their trust in you, a happy home and your own satisfaction.

It is you who choose to be in this occupation, willingly or for any other reason. After a busy day, all wait to return to the comfortable home set by you. They know you will be there to absorb all their stress and tiredness and relax them. Would the life have been the same had you been working outside to earn some money? Would you along with your family have been able to buy all the content in life that you are enjoying now with that money?

Respect yourself for what you are. Introduce yourself to the world with the same dignity . The world understands the importance of your job; it's time to make them accept it. Introduce yourself with pride and with twinkle in your eyes "I am a housewife". Kick that "just" out.

9. 【答案】     A housewife deserves to be respected and being a housewife is rewarding. Housewives deal with many things and play many roles in and outside the family. Besides, housewives can decrease family members' stress and tiredness and make them relax, which cannot be bought with the money they earn. In a word, housewives should proudly introduce themselves, knowing they are important.
